How it works

The outdoor wood furnace consists of two main components, the firebox and the water jacket. When wood is burned in the firebox, it heats the water in the water jacket to 180 F at which point the combustion air is automatically shut off causing the fire to be in its dormant stage. When the water temperature drops to 160° F, combustion air is forced into the firebox reigniting the fire. This causes the fire to instantly go from a dormant stage to an intense hot burn. Therefore the water in the water jacket is maintained between 160 and 180 F. Meanwhile, the hot water in the system is being pumped into the building 24 hours a day through well insulated lines underground at which point the hot water can be used to heat your home through a forced air system, heat your domestic hot water, radiant floor heat, water baseboard heaters and any other buildings. Every set-up uses a thermostat system to ensure a constant temperature in the building. The original heating method is not disconnected but now acts as a backup system. After transferring its heat to the building, the cooled water is returned to the outdoor furnace.
